30,000 Windows games now work on Linux — and in the very same week we hit that milestone, Ubisoft took For Honor, a game that already ran perfectly on Linux, and simply switched it off. In this video, we break down the REAL weakness of Linux gaming: it’s not compatibility anymore. It’s permission.
Proton has basically solved running Windows games on Linux and Steam Deck. But anti-cheat is a different story. Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye both officially support Linux, yet every publisher has to actually enable it — and more and more of them are choosing not to. We dig into the three layers of Linux gaming compatibility (execution, middleware, and authorization), how Apex Legends, GTA 5 Online, Battlefield, Destiny 2, and Rust all locked Linux gamers out, and why Rocket League proved that keeping Linux support is a choice, not a technical limitation.
And then there’s what Riot just announced: Vanguard On-Demand, a next-gen anti-cheat that verifies your entire machine — Secure Boot, TPM, hardware trust — before you’re even allowed to play. It’s being built hand-in-hand with Windows, and it could put the final nail in the coffin for Linux gaming as we know it. Is a locked-down, signed SteamOS the only Linux publishers will ever trust? Let’s talk about it.
In this video:
• Why Ubisoft removed For Honor from Linux — and why Steam still listed it as "Playable" days before the cutoff
• The 3 layers of compatibility: why Proton can fix execution but never permission
• Apex Legends, GTA 5 Online, Battlefield, Destiny 2, Rust — the pattern behind every Linux lockout
• Rocket League: the game that proves Linux support is a choice
• Riot Vanguard On-Demand explained — the anti-cheat that could destroy Linux gaming
• What Valve and Steam should actually do about it
