Ubuntu is about to change forever. Canonical has officially restarted development on Ubuntu Core Desktop—a completely locked-down, immutable, all-Snap Linux operating system arriving in the Ubuntu 27.04 cycle. Even crazier? Canonical wants this all-Snap architecture to eventually replace "Classic Ubuntu" as the default Ubuntu Desktop experience!
On Ubuntu Core Desktop, you can’t run "sudo apt install" on the host system because there are no Debian (.deb) packages on the base OS. Instead, your bootloader, Linux kernel, system services, desktop environment (GNOME or KDE Plasma), and all of your apps run as isolated, read-only Snaps.
In this video, we break down how Ubuntu Core Desktop actually works under the hood with its 6 "Lego-block" Snap layers, how it compares to other immutable Linux distros like Fedora Silverblue (rpm-ostree) and NixOS, how developers and gamers will use it with LXD/Workshop containers and one-command gaming kernels, and whether turning your PC into a locked-down appliance puts a wall between you and your hardware.
🔍 KEY TOPICS COVERED IN THIS VIDEO:
• Canonical’s official Ubuntu Core Desktop revival for Ubuntu 27.04 (daily builds incoming)
• Why you cannot run "sudo apt install" or install .deb packages on the read-only host
• The 6 Snap building blocks: Gadget Snap, Kernel Snap, Boot Base Snap, snapd, System Snaps, and Desktop Session Snaps
• Developer workstations on an immutable OS using LXD, Docker, and Canonical Workshop
• Linux Gaming on Ubuntu Core: The Steam Snap, Proton, Mesa, Nvidia gpu-2604 components, and hot-swapping gaming kernels
• Modular Ubuntu Flavors: Swapping GNOME for KDE Plasma (KDE Neon Core), Budgie, and MATE
• Mixing Debian-like stability with Arch-like excitement using Snap channels (stable, candidate, beta, edge)
• The controversy: Mandatory Ubuntu One login, TPM full-disk encryption, Steam Deck battery limits, and why some testers call it "more closed than Microsoft Windows"
