Agents for the Inner Loop and Outer Loop by Robert Brennan, OpenHands

AI coding agents are already becoming part of everyday development, but their role is expanding beyond local coding assistance.

In this ODSC AI East 2026 keynote, Robert Brennan, CEO of OpenHands, explores how developers are using agents in both the inner loop and outer loop of software development. The inner loop includes local, iterative coding tasks inside the developer workflow. The outer loop goes further, using agents for code review, CI/CD fixes, and even end-to-end changes without opening an IDE.

Drawing on his experience building OpenHands, a fully autonomous AI developer, Robert examines where agentic development works best, when it should be used with caution, and how teams can unlock meaningful productivity gains by applying agents to the right engineering tasks.
