[CFT] Major pfsync(4) Rewrite on the Horizon

Posted on June 21, 2023 by Michael G
A major rewrite of pfsync(4), the state table synchronization tool for redundant pf(4) setups is in the works.

In a recent message to tech@, David Gwynne (dlg@) describes the multi-year process behind the diff contained in the message,

moving pf forward has been a real struggle, and pfsync has been a
constant source of pain. we have been papering over the problems
for a while now, but it reached the point that it needed a fundamental
restructure, which is what this diff is.

i started rewriting pfsync (again) during h2k22 last year, and it's
only been in the last couple of months that i got all the existing
functionality working again, and it's only been the last three weeks in
particular that it's been solid. this is the first time since about
openbsd 6.9 that i've been able to upgrade my production firewalls
without them falling over.

which means there may still be rough edges, but testing by brave souls is encouraged. There are huge potential performance gains to be found if this works out right.

You can read the entire message (with the diff) here, or just take in the rest of the text after the fold.

OSI calls for revision of disclosure rules in CRA

OSI is a co-signatory of an open letter sent this week to the European Parliament by European Digital Rights (EDRi) expressing concern that the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) draft currently under consideration still includes mandatory requirements for vulnerability disclosure that violate best practices in Open Source software collaborations and are likely to actually undermine the security of digital products and the individuals who use them.

Linux on the 7th generation of consoles: Playstation 3 and Gentoo

Posted on June 21, 2023 by Michael G
Linux on the PS3 has a pretty interesting history. If you’re familiar with the History of the PS3 you probably know that when it was first released in 2006 Sony shipped it with support to run other operating systems through a feature called OtherOS. OtherOS allowed people to install operating systems like Linux or FreeBSD on a second partition on the PS3 hard drive. In 2010 Sony removed OtherOS support in firmware 3.21 because of “security concerns” AKA some people were starting to use it to look a bit too close into the PS3 internals and figure out how to pirate games. With custom firmware it’s possible to use OtherOS on modern firmwares so that’s what we’ll be doing here. This is the continuation of part 1 about the Xbox 360.
