LostCarPark Drupal Blog: Drupal Advent Calendar day 1 - Gin Admin Theme

Welcome to the 2023 Drupal Advent Calendar. Behind today’s door, we find the Gin Admin Theme, with a fantastic write-up by Ludovic Favre (Grumpy74).

Since Drupal 10, Claro has been the default admin theme for Drupal websites. It added a new look and feel improving usability for Drupal site builders and administrators. But wouldn’t be amazing if you could add new features on top of it? Well, that’s exactly what Gin Admin Theme provides.

First of all, the Gin Admin theme maintainer, @saschaeggi, is a contributor on Claro theme and the Drupal Design System. This makes it hyper relevant in terms of…

Delta chat and end-to-end encryption

TWIF generated on Thursday, 30 Nov 2023, Week 48

F-Droid Core

There is a new release of F-Droid. It is still in alpha at version 1.19.0-alpha2 and it has the following improvements:

  • New settings to give user control over IPFS HTTP Gateways
  • Enable per-app language selection (@licaon-kter)
  • Material Design 2 updates (@proletarius101)
  • Fix bug when adding new repo via unofficial mirror

Community News

We want to let you know that the CoC team resigned, two important members left F-Droid two weeks ago and a third one went for an indefinite break. See their announcement for more details. We thank them for all their great contributions that made F-Droid better while they were around.

@linsui comments:

Delta Chat introduces guaranteed end-to-end encryption in 1.42. In previous versions the E2EE was not verified to prevent MitM attacks from the e-mail providers. Now it can be guaranteed by scanning another user’s “QR Invite code”.

More details can be found in the developer blog post.

First bits of a Haiku compatibility layer for NetBSD

Does anyone here remember Cosmoe? Cosmoe was an attempt to combine Haiku’s API with the Linux kernel and related tools, started in the early 2000s. The project eventually fizzled out, now only an obscure footnote for BeOS diehards such as myself. It seems, though, that the idea of combining the Haiku API with a mature UNIX-like operating system refuses to die, and a few days ago, on the NetBSD Users’s Discussion List, a developer by the name of Stephan picked up the baton. Some years ago I already started to work on a compatibility layer for NetBSD and resumed working on it recently. I think a compatibility layer would mostly consist of kernel components and a custom libroot.so. I have created a libroot that provides functionality missing in libc and it should behave like the original one. It makes use of libc and libpthread at the moment as well as syscalls of the kernel components. The source can be found on Github. This is clearly an experimental project, but Stephan does note he has had success running the Haiku IPC test programs, so it’s definitely more than scribbles on a napkin. The attraction of this idea is clear, too – Haiku API, but on a stable kernel with vastly superior hardware and device support. I’m not entirely sure if it’s got life in it, but even if it doesn’t – it’s amazing work, and that in an of itself makes it a success.
