Some tricks for simplifying Capybara queries

Posted on November 1, 2023 by Michael G
Capybara’s find method is a lot more powerful than it first appears. In this post, I show how the find(:element, ...) variation can be used to simplify a common type of query. Capybara also has an interesting configuration option related to test IDs. Check it out! https://mattbrictson.com/blog/simplify-capybara-selectors

Web browsing is a pervasive part of modern life, and the quality of the experience directly affects the quality of your day. When your tasks are disrupted by slow or unresponsive pages, it is frustrating and distracting. As such, performance is a key component of Mozilla’s vision for the web. To deliver against our vision […]

pspp @ Savannah: PSPP 2.0.0-pre2 has been released

Posted on November 1, 2023 by Michael G

I’m very pleased to announce the release of a new version of GNU PSPP.  PSPP is a program for statistical analysis of sampled data.  It is a free replacement for the proprietary program SPSS.

Changes from 1.6.2 to 2.0.0-pre2:

  • The CTABLES command is now implemented.
  • FREQUENCIES now honors the LAYERED setting on SPLIT FILE.
  • AGGREGATE:
    • New aggregation functions CGT, CLT, CIN, and COUT.
    • Break variables are now optional.
  • ADD FILES, MATCH FILES, and UPDATE now allow string variables with the same name to have different widths.
  • CROSSTABS now calculates significance of Pearson and Spearman correlations in symmetric measures.
  • DISPLAY MACROS is now implemented.
  • SET SUMMARY is now implemented.
  • SHOW ENVIRONMENT is now implemented.
  • Removed the MODIFY VARS command, which is not in SPSS.
  • Building from a Git repository, which previously required GIMP, now requires rsvg-convert from librsvg2 instead.
  • The pspp-dump-sav program is no longer installed by default.
  • Improved the search options in the syntax editor.
  • Localisations for the ar (Arabic) and ta (Tamil) locales have been added.
  • Journaling is now enabled by default when PSPP or PSPPIRE is started interactively.  In PSPPIRE, use Edit|Options to override the default.

Please send PSPP bug reports to bug-gnu-pspp@gnu.org.

The beauty of finished software

Posted on November 1, 2023 by Michael G
In a world where constant change is the norm, finished software provides a breath of fresh air. It’s a reminder that reliability, consistency, and user satisfaction can coexist in the realm of software development. So the next time you find yourself yearning for the latest update, remember that sometimes, the best software is the one that doesn’t change at all. While this is a nice sentiment, the reality is that software has become so complex, competition to cutthroat, and operating systems so changeful, that “finishing” software just doesn’t seem like a realistic and attainable goal anymore. The example used in the article, WordStar 4.0 for DOS, can only be “finished” because DOS doesn’t change anymore.

MareTV-Os Fiordes de Flensburgo – A Enseada Germano-Dinamarquesa

Posted on October 31, 2023 by Michael G

  • Brief description:
    • Would you like to try out and give feedback on a proposed overhaul to how Drupal’s administration menu works? There’s a module for that.
  • Brief history
    • How old: project created in 2004, but the namespace was taken over earlier this year as a place to work on the proposed new navigation in the contrib space
    • Versions available: No releases yet, so you need to clone the repo into your custom modules
  • Maintainership
    • Very active development, commits in the past day
  • Number of open issues:
    • 46, 14 of which are bugs
  • Usage stats:
    • Officially 1 site is using it, but not recommended for production anyway
  • Maintainer(s):
    • Include Christina Chumillas, Sascha Eggenberger, Lauri Eskola, Mike Herschel, and more
  • Module features and usage
    • At this point, really a prototype, trying to define what the user experience should be
    • Worth noting that the latest release for the Gin admin theme also includes this new updated navigation as an experimental feature that can be updated, but still best to leave feedback on the Navigation project
    • The main idea is that instead of having dropdowns that fly out for deeper level menu items, the navigation is in a sidebar, with menu items that expand to reveal child items when clicked
    • It’s worth noting that dropdown menus with multiple levels handled in flyouts are a known usability pain point, and are often cited by industry experts like Jakob Neilsen as something to avoid
    • There are still some usability issues to be thought through with this approach, for example there is no longer a way to reach the top page of a section or subsection, because clicking on the link shows or hides the child items instead
    • This was a subject of some very active discussions at DrupalCon Europe last week, so I thought it would be good to cover this week, so our listeners can add their voices
