However almost every “circle” you can see in printed media (and most purely digital ones) are not, in fact, circles. Why is this? Since roughly the mid 80s all “high quality” print jobs have been done either in PostScript or, nowadays almost exclusively, in PDF. They use the same basic drawing model, which does not have a primitive for circles (or circle arcs). The only primitives they have are straight line segments, rectangles and Bézier curves. None of these can be used to express a circle accurately. You can only do an approximation of a circle but it is always slightly eccentric. The only way to create a proper circle is to have a raster image like the one above. Shouldn’t be that big of a deal, right? I’m sure nobody is using PDF for anything that would require the kind of precision needed for a perfect circle, like CAD drawings for laser cutters and similar machinery. Right? Again one might ask whether this has any practical impact. For this case, again, probably not. But did you know that one of the cases PDF is being considered (and, based on Internet rumors, is already being used) is as an interchange format for CAD drawings? Now it suddenly starts mattering. If you have any component where getting a really accurate circle shape is vital (like pistons and their holes), suddenly all your components are slightly misshaped. Which would not be fun. This is why we can’t have nice things.

Following the launch of the Saloon and the Estate, the All-Terrain rounds off the E-Class family as the third model. Mercedes-Benz has offered the E-Class Estate also as an All-Terrain since 2017.
The E-Class All-Terrain is equipped as standard with AIRMATIC single-chamber air suspension. It provides up to 46 mm more ground clearance and continuously adjustable damping for the compression and rebound stages of the shock absorbers.
Luggage capacity can be expanded from 615 to 1,830 litres. In the plug-in hybrid model, the capacity ranges from 460 to 1,675 litres.
Rear passengers benefit particularly from the 22-millimetre longer wheelbase (2,961 millimetres). They now also have 1,519 millimetres of elbow room – an increase of 25 millimetres.
The E-Class All-Terrain has a braked towing capacity of up to 2,100 kilograms. This also applies to the plug‑in hybrid. The unbraked towing capacity is 750 kilograms. Thanks to a tongue weight of up to 84 kilograms, e-bikes can also go along for the ride.
With the illuminated grille frame (optional), two optical fibre bundles positioned behind the chrome strips receive light from LED modules.
The screen graphics can be customised with two display styles (classic and sport) and three modes (navigation, assistance, service). With the new MBUX, the main display icons are now simpler and colour-coded to resemble smartphone screen tiles.
Depending on the market, the communication module runs on 5G technology. This standard supports much faster data transfer rates than LTE/UMTS.
The digital vehicle key lets drivers use an iPhone or Apple Watch as a car key. After pairing a compatible device paired with the vehicle through Mercedes me connect, the device can be used to start, open and lock the E-Class All-Terrain. Key sharing is also possible. The digital key can be shared with up to 16 persons. In markets where Mercedes me connect services are available, the E-Class All-Terrain can be pre-equipped for the digital key as part of the KEYLESS-GO comfort package.

Woven Bark Fibre
I made a rough type of textile from bark fibre. This is the same tree I use for making cordage though I don’t know its name. It has been raining a lot here lately (the video also shows how well the hut stands up to rain) and this caused a large wattle tree to fall down taking a few smaller trees with it. One of the trees was the type I use for fibre. So I stripped the bark from it and divided it into thinner strips back at the hut.
I spun the fibre strips into a rough yarn using a drop spindle. The drop spindle was basically the spindle and fly wheel I used in the pump drill video I made a while ago. A small stick was tied to the top of the drop spindle to act as a hook to make sure the fibres spun. I tied bark strips to the spindle and spun the spindle so it twisted the strip. When one strip ran out a new strip was added and twisted into the thread.
I then made a loom by hammering stakes into the ground and lashing cross bars to it. Stakes were hammered into the ground to hold every first string while a moveable cross bar held every second string. When the bar was lifted a gap was formed where every second string was above every first string. Then when the bar was dropped a gap was formed where the opposite was true. So in this way the weaving thread could be drawn through over and under one way and then under over back the opposite way. The alternative was to weave by hand which would have taken longer.
Collecting, stripping and drying the fibre took a few days to do. Spinning and weaving took just over a day per 70 cm square. The result was a rough material about as stiff as a welcome mat. So at this stage I’m using them as mats. In future I will investigate finer fibres, such as those from banana stalks, as a possible material for cloth. They take more processing but produce a finer product. I may also make a permanent, portable loom that can be taken indoors when it rains.
