California just passed a law that puts an age verification check right inside your operating system- and Linux may have just escaped it. In this video, we break down California’s new age assurance law (the Digital Age Assurance Act and the AB 1856 amendment), what it actually means for Windows, macOS, and Linux users, and why open source operating systems like Debian, Fedora, Ubuntu, Arch, and Pop!_OS may be completely exempt while Microsoft and Apple are stuck building OS-level age checks.

We cover how California’s OS-level age verification actually works (spoiler: it’s a self-declared age bracket, not an ID upload), why Linux’s forkable, open source nature broke the law’s core assumption, and the licensing test that decides which operating systems are exempt. We also look at how System76- the Denver-based Linux company behind Pop!_OS- helped get this law rewritten, first in Colorado and then in California.

And no, the fight isn’t over. The bill is still sitting unsigned on Governor Newsom’s desk, app stores like Flathub and the Snap Store may not be protected, and states like Illinois, Texas, Utah, and Louisiana are writing their own completely different age verification laws.
