New world No.1 Carlos Alcaraz arrived in Valencia on Tuesday for the Davis Cup by Rakuten Finals 2022. The competition gets underway today in the Spanish city, as well as in Bologna, Hamburg and Glasgow. In a hotly anticipated appearance straight from Flushing Meadows, the US Open champion said he is “very proud to arrive as No. 1 and do my bit for the team. Playing the Davis Cup is always special, it’s a unique atmosphere and I’m looking forward to being with the team.” The 19-year-old, the youngest player in history to top the rankings, believes that after fulfilling his dream “of winning a Grand Slam and being No.1, of course another of my dreams would be to lift the Ensaladera with Spain”.
Alcaraz said his recent achievement “is a great triumph that I am happy to be able to share with all the people”, who he hopes will support and enjoy the Spanish team’s matches on home soil. Spain is in Group B of the Group Stage alongside Canada, Serbia and Korea, Rep. Fans at the Fuente de San Luis Municipal Pavilion in Valencia will be able to watch the best tennis player on the planet in the Davis Cup, his first appearance after making history.
