Welcome to another insightful episode of RareErth podcast with your host, Manoj Radhakrishna! In this series, we explore diverse facets of parenting, blending personal experiences from Manoj’s journey raising his 9-year-old daughter with extensive research and interviews with fellow parents.

Manoj kicks off this episode by challenging the notion that simply having experienced childhood qualifies one to be an effective parent. Drawing an analogy with surgery, he emphasizes the need for a thoughtful set of philosophies guiding parenting approaches, ideally established even before the child’s arrival.

#1 Make them feel loved
Manoj challenges the common obsession with discipline, asserting that the primary responsibility of parents is to love their children. In a world often fixated on turning kids into societal cogs, he encourages fostering an environment where children know they matter, irrespective of achievements. A profound question arises: Can we truly consider ourselves successful parents if our children excel in society’s expectations but lack a sense of fulfillment?

#2 Become a true friend
Reflecting on childhood experiences, Manoj urges parents to become genuine friends to their children, recalling the inclination to share problems with friends over parents due to judgment-free acceptance. By minimizing the constant use of “No” in conversations, parents can establish trust and influence, gaining unique insights into their child’s world.

#3 Become a role model
Manoj underscores the importance of congruence between parental advice and actions. He advocates for modeling desired behaviors, emphasizing that children are more likely to respect and emulate parents who practice what they preach. Being a credible role model involves auditing one’s own life to ensure alignment between words and deeds.

#4 Common value system
Inspired by pastor Andy Stanley, Manoj advocates for the development of a family’s “North Star” – a shared value system or goal that unites the entire family. This not only fosters a strong family bond but also creates a culture where children willingly spend time with each other and their parents, even in the absence of obligation.
