Generally speaking, when a vehicle is offered with both internal combustion and all-electric versions, the EV version may be compromised a bit. But Mercedes-Benz is turning the scenario around with the Concept CLA-Class, unveiled at the IAA 2023 in Munich to preview the company’s first all-electric compact car platform.
Based on Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA), the Concept CLA-Class features slick styling, sustainable interior materials and a company-estimated range of 766 kilometers on the optimistic WLTP scale. While powertrain and battery details are scarce, the automaker says the CLA is inspired by the Vision EQXX concept for both the electric motors and the Superscreen infotainment system that spans the dashboard.
The CLA concept takes the familiar fast sedan (“four-door coupe”) shape that has been the hallmark of the nameplate since its introduction for the 2014 model year. But the designers changed the look with a longer cowl and shorter aft deck for sportier proportions and enhanced it with a stunning layer of Pomegranate Red paintwork. What sets the Concept CLA apart from its predecessors even more is the bolder grille element, which takes its undercarriage shape from the Mercedes-AMG SL roadster and GT sports car. A three-dimensional galaxy of illuminated stars rising from the body-colored grid panel gives the concept a closely jewel-like appearance.
Mercedes’ corporate Sensual Purity design language is evident in the Concept CLA’s sleek body sides and curved rear, but has been slightly revised with wide fenders visible under a sharp chrome strip that blends seamlessly into the front and rear lights. Speaking of which, the headlights and taillights feature full-width LED lighting and three-point daytime running lights; instead of appearing under a sheet of glass or plastic, it was embedded in a relief. This gives the CLA a stepped appearance on the front with its grille shape; this may be the car’s only styling flaw.
Inside, the Concept CLA borrows a lot from the Vision EQXX, including sustainable materials and a high-tech Superscreen display. The silver and white seat upholstery is made of Nappa leather tanned using coffee pods, an otherwise unusable byproduct of the beverage industry, and the shimmering purple accent fabric is made from recycled PET plastic. Stripes of lab-grown silk appear inside the door pockets, the mats are made of bamboo, and the satin silver doorknobs and armrest cover are actually made of recyclable paper. Fun styling elements include the classic Benz laurel wreath enlarged and embroidered into the seats.
