KDE Plasma 6.8 is shaping up to be one of the most important KDE releases in years. After nearly 30 years, KDE is officially saying goodbye to the Plasma X11 desktop session and going all-in on Wayland. But Plasma 6.8 is bringing much more than just the end of X11.

In this video, we take a complete first look at KDE Plasma 6.8, including the move to a Wayland-only desktop, what happens to X11 applications, Steam and Linux games, major NVIDIA GPU improvements, Spectacle screen recording upgrades, multi-GPU and eGPU performance gains, KRdp remote desktop improvements, and a huge collection of desktop polish and usability changes.

One of the biggest questions is: does removing the X11 session mean X11 applications stop working? Thankfully, no. Xwayland remains, which means Steam, games and traditional X11 Linux applications can continue running inside the Plasma Wayland session. We’ll break down exactly what KDE is removing, what stays, and which specialized workflows may still have problems.

NVIDIA users also have something exciting to look forward to. KDE is enabling triple buffering by default for NVIDIA GPUs, helping KWin deliver smoother animations and better frame pacing. Plasma 6.8 also includes major multi-GPU and eGPU improvements, with some KDE developer testing showing huge performance gains in specific native Wayland configurations.

Spectacle gets a major upgrade too. KDE’s built-in screenshot and screen recording tool can now capture microphone audio, system audio, or both at the same time. High-refresh-rate screen recording is smoother, virtual displays are more flexible, and Spectacle is becoming a much more capable built-in Linux screen recorder.

We also look at KDE’s improved KRdp remote desktop experience, including bidirectional clipboard support, automatic locking after disconnecting, better unattended remote access, headless desktop improvements and other changes designed to make remote desktop work properly in the Wayland era.

Plasma 6.8 also brings plenty of smaller improvements, including better Steam and Discord window decorations, automatic shadows and rounded corners, faster auto-hide panels, improved multi-monitor configuration, VRAM monitoring in System Monitor, smarter automatic brightness, better Autostart controls, improved System Settings search and more.

KDE Plasma 6.8 Beta 1 is available now, with Beta 2 scheduled for September 24 and the final KDE Plasma 6.8 release planned for October 14, 2026 — KDE’s 30th anniversary.

Is Wayland finally ready to completely replace the traditional Plasma X11 desktop? And is KDE making the right decision by removing the X11 session? Watch the full video and let me know what you think in the comments.
