Tech billionaires just poured $18.5 MILLION into a Linux distro — and not Ubuntu, Debian or Linux Mint. Michael Dell, Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Shopify, the co-founder of Stripe and eight more tech founders each pledged a million dollars of their own personal money to Omarchy, the Arch Linux and Hyprland based distro created by DHH (David Heinemeier Hansson), the creator of Ruby on Rails.

So why Omarchy? Why not KDE, GNOME, Arch itself or Asahi Linux? In this video I break down exactly where the $18.5 million came from, how much of it is actually cash versus AI token credits, where every dollar is being spent, and why OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, Fireworks and OpenRouter are quietly backing an "agentic Linux distribution" instead of macOS or Windows.

We cover the "it’s just dotfiles" criticism, Omarchy’s first full-time hires (including a Linux kernel developer and PCI subsystem co-maintainer), the exclusive Hyprland sponsorship, the Quickshell hire, the mise sponsorship, the Omarchy M Apple Silicon initiative, and what all this money means for desktop Linux as a whole — even if you never install Omarchy.

Is this the most overfunded rice in Linux history, or are these founders early to something the rest of us haven’t seen yet? Let me know what you think in the comments.
