Martin Anderson-Clutz – @mandclu Access Policy

  • Brief description:
    • Does your Drupal site need a flexible way to manage access to content? There’s a module for that!
  • Brief history
    • How old: created in Nov 2022
    • Versions available: 1.0.0-beta1, works with D9 and 10
  • Maintainership
    • Actively maintained, most recent release was in the past week
  • Number of open issues:
    • 4, none of which are bugs
  • Test coverage
  • Usage stats:
    • 12 sites
  • Maintainer(s):
    • partdigital
  • Module features and usage
    • Allows a site builder to define different policies that can be used to manage content access or editing capabilities based on various factors, all within the Drupal UI
    • Criteria can include field values of the content, field values on the current user’s profile, the time of day, and more
    • The policy can restrict access, for example view acces to only selected people or people with a certain role or field value on their profile. I
    • Once defined, policies can be assigned manually, or automatically applied based on configurable selection criteria
    • The project page describes this as an Attribute Based Access Control (ABAC) architecture, which complements Drupal core’s Role Based Access Control that our listeners are probably familiar with
    • I used it for the first recently, and found that given the power and flexibility the module provides, it’s great that it has in-depth documentation
    • I filed a couple of issues (technically half of the open issues) and partdigital was very responsive
    • The module does also provide an API for defining your own policy type, access rules, rule widgets, and more. So if you need a setup even more custom that what Access Policy can provide out of the box, it’s likely you can extend it to meet your individual use case

The final legislative phase of the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) is starting and the drafts still have issues arising from bad framing by the Commission or Parliament. Read OSI’s recommendations to frame the trialogue.

Apple and Microsoft fight Brussels over ‘gatekeeper’ label for iMessage and Bing

Apple and Microsoft have argued with Brussels that some of their services are insufficiently popular to be designated as “gatekeepers” under new landmark EU legislation designed to curb the power of Big Tech. Brussels’ battle with the two US companies over Apple’s iMessage chat app and Microsoft’s Bing search engine comes ahead of Wednesday’s publication of the first list of services to be regulated by the Digital Markets Act. Microsoft’s argument seems to make sense. Microsoft was unlikely to dispute the designation of its Windows operating system, which dominates the PC industry, as a gatekeeper, these people said. But it has argued that Bing has a market share of just 3 per cent and further legal scrutiny would put it at a greater disadvantage. I guess the validity of Microsoft’s argument hinges on if that 3% equates to the number of users requirements set by the European Union, but I guess we’ll find out tomorrow. Apple’s argument, though, seems more precarious. Separately, Apple argued that iMessage did not meet the threshold of user numbers at which the rules applied and therefore should not comply with obligations that include opening the service to rival apps such as Meta’s WhatsApp, said the two people. Analysts have estimated that iMessage, which is built into every iPhone, iPad and Mac, has as many as 1bn users globally, but Apple has not disclosed any figures for several years. The decision is likely to hinge on how Apple and the EU define the market in which iMessage operates. One billion users worldwide is most definitely going to mean it exceeds the minimums set by the DSA. Apple, you’re going to have to open up iMessage, and allow competitors and newcomers to interoperate with it. Using messaging services as lock-in is outdated, anti-consumer, and harmful to competition. And if you don’t like it – as they say on the Isle of Man, a boat leaves in the morning.

Introduced with Stylish Design and Electric Range of 466+ Kilometers,Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA Class

The rear-wheel drive electric car previews the first version of the compact Mercedes Modular Architecture.

Generally speaking, when a vehicle is offered with both internal combustion and all-electric versions, the EV version may be compromised a bit. But Mercedes-Benz is turning the scenario around with the Concept CLA-Class, unveiled at the IAA 2023 in Munich to preview the company’s first all-electric compact car platform.

Based on Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA), the Concept CLA-Class features slick styling, sustainable interior materials and a company-estimated range of 766 kilometers on the optimistic WLTP scale. While powertrain and battery details are scarce, the automaker says the CLA is inspired by the Vision EQXX concept for both the electric motors and the Superscreen infotainment system that spans the dashboard.

The CLA concept takes the familiar fast sedan (“four-door coupe”) shape that has been the hallmark of the nameplate since its introduction for the 2014 model year. But the designers changed the look with a longer cowl and shorter aft deck for sportier proportions and enhanced it with a stunning layer of Pomegranate Red paintwork. What sets the Concept CLA apart from its predecessors even more is the bolder grille element, which takes its undercarriage shape from the Mercedes-AMG SL roadster and GT sports car. A three-dimensional galaxy of illuminated stars rising from the body-colored grid panel gives the concept a closely jewel-like appearance.

Mercedes’ corporate Sensual Purity design language is evident in the Concept CLA’s sleek body sides and curved rear, but has been slightly revised with wide fenders visible under a sharp chrome strip that blends seamlessly into the front and rear lights. Speaking of which, the headlights and taillights feature full-width LED lighting and three-point daytime running lights; instead of appearing under a sheet of glass or plastic, it was embedded in a relief. This gives the CLA a stepped appearance on the front with its grille shape; this may be the car’s only styling flaw.

Inside, the Concept CLA borrows a lot from the Vision EQXX, including sustainable materials and a high-tech Superscreen display. The silver and white seat upholstery is made of Nappa leather tanned using coffee pods, an otherwise unusable byproduct of the beverage industry, and the shimmering purple accent fabric is made from recycled PET plastic. Stripes of lab-grown silk appear inside the door pockets, the mats are made of bamboo, and the satin silver doorknobs and armrest cover are actually made of recyclable paper. Fun styling elements include the classic Benz laurel wreath enlarged and embroidered into the seats.

#! code: Drupal 10: Adding Third Party Settings To Drupal Configuration Entities

Drupal’s modular system allows for all kinds of additions to be added to your site through plugins, entities and configuration.

Thanks to Drupal’s modular configuration system you can also inject custom configuration into existing configuration entities. This allows you to extend the functionality of an existing entity and ensure that any customisation are saved in the system configuration. Any configuration entity can be augmented without changing the existing configuration schema of the entity, which might cause knock on effects to other modules.

If you have spent time with Drupal configuration then you might have seen the addition of a third_party_settings block to your configuration. A good example of this is with the core Shortcut module and the third party settings it adds to the installed themes when the site is installed using the standard install profile. The Claro theme, for example, will have the following configuration out of the box.

third_party_settings:
  shortcut:
    module_link: true

This allows the Shortcut module to detect if it should show a link on the page when this theme is present on the page. The configuration for this setting then doesn’t have to live in a separate configuration entity (which would be exported into a separate file); it can just live with the configuration for the theme and be loaded as part of the theme configuration.

In this article I will look at how to use additional settings to add custom configuration items to an existing configuration entity. I’ll also cover a couple of use cases for this technique.
